The City of Lights is beautiful at any time of year, and perhaps never more so than during the festive season. Christmas in Paris is an open-air art experience; a bubble of enchantment in the depths of winter.
Illuminations, Christmas markets and more: Paris puts on all its finery for the festive season.
No change in 2015: as usual, from 4 November onwards the window displays at Paris department stores are adorned with festive decorations inspired by eclectic themes – a fairytale universe at Printemps, Star Wars at Galeries Lafayette and a British Christmas at BHV.
From 18 November, kids and grownups alike can marvel at the traditional Christmas illuminations on the Champs Elysées – culminating, on New Year’s Eve, with a superb display of lights projected onto the Arc de Triomphe. A number of events are also scheduled to take place on the legendary avenue on New Year’s Day: a brass band parade, circus acts and more.
To tick off your Christmas shopping list, the Christmas markets are a great way to pick up gifts while spending some time outdoors. A popular tradition, the Christmas markets open as early as November, conferring a festive air to many areas of the city: around the Eiffel Tower, near the Grand Palais, between Place de la Concorde and the Champs-Elysées roundabout and so on (for opening hours and locations, see parisinfo.com).
Attractions galore to get visitors and Parisians into a festive mood.
The Big Wheel and other delightful fairground attractions make up the ‘Jours de fête’ at the Grand Palais from 18 December 2015 to 3 January 2016.
Tourism professionals vie to come up with inventive ways to enthral both visitors and Parisians at Christmas. Paris Shopping Tour takes visitors on guided Christmas shopping tours through the streets and shops Parisians go to. A 1-hr30 shopping trip through the illuminated streets of the French capital is a gift in itself! A behind-the-scenes tour of the finest Paris monuments is on offer from the agency Cultival: five fascinating cultural excursions, from the Eiffel Tower to the Cité du Cinéma, including some of the top musicals.
